Gehirn was a highly secretive research organization under the control of the Human Instrumentality Committee. It operated until 2010, and had branches all over the world. Its key members were Gendo Ikari, Yui Ikari, and Naoko Akagi (eventually Kouzou Fuyutsuki, Ritsuko Akagi, and Misato Katsuragi also joined). The existence of Gehirn was not publicly known, and it often operated under such fronts as the Artificial Evolution Laboratory. The purpose of the organization was to conduct reaserch and development on the MAGI Super-Computer System, Project E (the Evangelion Units), and Human Instrumentality Project.

In 2010, following the completion of the MAGI Super-Computer System (and the suicide of its developer Naoko Akagi), Gehirn was dissolved. Its staff and resources were immediately reassigned to a newly created organization called NERV, which was to be the executive body for the outlined projects.

In reality, Gehirn means brain in German. It is considered symbolic that Gehirn was dissolved immediately following the completion of NERV's brain (the MAGI Super-Computer System). Both Gehirn and NERV, although funded and seemingly under the jurisdiction of the United Nations, are actually controlled by a secret organization called SEELE.
