Gehirn

Gehirn is a highly-secretive research organization under the control of the Human Instrumentality Committee. It has branches all over the world, with Gendo Ikari, Yui Ikari, and Naoko Akagi as its key members. The existence of Gehirn is not publicly known, as it typically operates using such fronts as the Artificial Evolution Laboratory.

Eventually Kouzou Fuyutsuki, Ritsuko Akagi, and Misato Katsuragi also join the organization, which proves to be the key to propelling Project E and Human Instrumentality Project. In 2010 however, following the completion of the MAGI Super-Computer System and the suicide of it's developer Naoko Akagi, Gehirn is dissolved. It's staff and resources are however immediately reassigned to the newly created Special Duty Organization NERV, which was to be the executive body for the outlined projects.

Gehirn means brain in German, and the fact that it was dismantled shortly following the completion of NERV's brain (the MAGI Super-Computer System), is often seen as very symbolic. Both Gehirn and NERV, although funded and seemingly under the jurisdiction of the United Nations, are actually under the control of a secret organization known as SEELE.
