MAGI Super-Computer System

Evangelion ScreenshotA biological super-computer developed by Dr. Naoko Akagi. It is often regarded as NERV's brain as it considers, examines, and resolves numerous pending problems and projects. The distinguishing characteristic of the MAGI system is that human dilemma is recreated by implanting human personality traits into the operating system.

A MAGI system is composed of three distinct bio-computer cores; Melchior-1, Balthasar-2, and Casper-3. These three cores are modeled after the three aspects of Dr. Naoko Akagi's (the developer's) personality, her as a scientist, as a mother, and as a woman. All major decisions require the unanimous agreement of all three cores.

There are six MAGI systems deployed around the world:

  • MAGI-01: New Tokyo-3, Japan (Original)
  • MAGI-02: Matsushiro, Japan
  • MAGI-03: Berlin, Germany
  • MAGI-04: Massachusetts, USA (MIT campus)
  • MAGI-05: Hamburg, Germany
  • MAGI-06: Beijing, China

Analysis

  • Mythology of the Magi

The name MAGI refers to the three wise men (Magi, Three Kings) from the East who foretold the birth of Jesus Christ in the New Testament of the Bible. Their names were Melchior, Balthasar, and Casper. The word Magi is a Latinization of the plural Greek word magos. The term is a specific occupational title referring to the priestly caste of Zoroastrianism. As part of their religion, these priests paid particular attention to the stars, and gained an international reputation for astrology, which at that time was a highly regarded science.
