Asuka Langley Sohryu proves to a hit with the male student population, with gossip and rumors about her spreading across the school. The ever-resourceful Kensuke Aida and Touji Suzuhara, despite their dislike of Asuka, take advantage of the opportunity by selling photographs of her around campus.

Evangelion ScreenshotIn the meantime, Asuka greets Shinji Ikari, and after explaining he should appreciate his good fortune that the most popular girl in school is speaking to him, she asks about the First Child, Rei Ayanami. Shinji looks at Rei, and Asuka is quick to introduce herself, explaining that the two should be good friends because it would be convenient. Rei is not impressed, and replies that if she is ordered to, she will do it.

At NERV Headquarters Ryoji Kaji reacquaints himself with Ritsuko Akagi, garnering the wrath of a cranky and very jealous Misato Katsuragi. Kaji then informs Misato that he has been ordered to stay at NERV Headquarters, and that the two can hang around just like the used to. As an irritated Misato tells him not to flatter himself, an alarm goes off. The NERV Command Center quickly identifies the target as an Angel.

Evangelion ScreenshotDue to the extensive damage sustained by New Tokyo-3 during the battle with Ramiel, the Fifth Angel, NERV Operations Director Misato Katsuragi concludes that the Angel should be intercepted before reaching the city. Evangelion Unit-01 with Shinji Ikari and Evangelion Unit-02 with Asuka Langley Sohryu are quickly dispatched by air to the location of the Angel.

Asuka is quick to point out her frustration over not being allowed to handle her first fight in Japan alone. Shinji explains that it is just procedure, but Asuka is nonetheless eager to prove her superior piloting skills.

Evangelion ScreenshotAs Israfel, the Seventh Angel finally makes landfall, Asuka recklessly charges the Angel with her spear. In one swift attack, she slices Israfel in two, proudly commenting that a fight should be clean and elegant, without waste.

Unfortunately, the two pieces of Israfel suddenly come back to life, and Evangelion Unit-01 and Evangelion Unit-02 quickly find themselves embedded head-first into the ground. NERV is forced to abandon the operation. The U.N. Forces take over and proceed to attack the Angel with Nē Weapons, managing to burn off approximately 30% of its mass, forcing it to stop and regenerate.

Evangelion ScreenshotAn annoyed NERV Vice Commander Kouzou Fuyutsuki scolds both Asuka and Shinji for embarrassing NERV, ordering them to learn to work together. In the meantime, Misato Katsuragi is flooded with complaints for the incident. Ritsuko Akagi warns her that she may be demoted, but brings her some data that might save her job. Misato is grateful, to which Ritsuko explains this is not her idea, but rather Ryoji Kaji's.

Shinji Ikari arrives home, which he finds filled with boxes. He is shocked to find Asuka there, who tells him that he has been dumped for the new model (her). Misato arrives just in time to explain that this is part of their new training, and that the two will live together until they learn to work together.

Evangelion ScreenshotMisato then explains her plan against the currently dormant but quickly regenerating Israfel, pointing out that the only way to defeat the Angel is with a simultaneous two-front assault on both of its Cores. Misato explains that they have six days until the Angel fully regenerates and begins its assault on New Tokyo-3.

Touji, Kensuke, and their class representative come to check in on Shinji and Asuka, and are shocked to find out that the two are living together.

Fortunately, Misato arrives with Rei Ayanami to explain the situation. The group then discuss how Asuka's and Shinji's coordination is coming along, to which Misato replies not too good. After yet another mistake, Asuka becomes frustrated, saying that she could never synchronize with Shinji. Misato asks Rei to try, and when the two actually manage to synchronize, Asuka becomes upset and storms out.

Evangelion ScreenshotAs Shinji goes after her to apologize, the two have a heart-to-heart conversation, during which Asuka makes it clear that now her pride is at stake, and that she will put both Rei and Misato to shame by proving them that she can do this. The next few days are filled with rigorous training.

The day before the attack Shinji and Asuka are left alone in the apartment, with Misato still at NERV Headquarters. Asuka decides to sleep in a separate room, slamming shut the door behind her.

In the middle of the night, with a nervous Shinji still awake and listening to his music, a dazed and half-asleep Asuka walks past to go to the bathroom. When she is done, she accidentally lies down and falls asleep next to Shinji. A shocked and confused Shinji attempts to steal a kiss when he realizes Asuka is having a dream of her mother, and that tears are forming in her eyes. Shinji grabs a blanket and goes to sleep on the other side of the room.

Evangelion ScreenshotIn the meantime, Misato is having a discussion with Ritsuko about her unresolved feelings towards Ryoji Kaji. While Misato denies it and calls Kaji immature, Ritsuko comments that Kaji might still have feelings for her.

The next day Israfel resumes its attack, with Evangelion Unit-01 and Evangelion Unit-02 ready to launch. The battle itself, one of the most coordinated fights ever composed, takes only 62 seconds, resulting in the destruction of both of Israfel's Cores. After the massive explosion clears, the two Evangelion Units are found lying in a suggestive position inside the resulting crater. NERV Vice Commander Kouzou Fuyutsuki grabs his head, commenting that those darn kids are embarrassing him again.
