TV Series

Set in the year 2015 of a post-apocalyptic world, Neon Genesis Evangelion is a psychological drama telling the story of Shinji Ikari, a reluctant young hero who is called upon to wage war against mysterious enemies known only as the Angels. In an effort to save the remnants of humanity from this threat, Shinji is recruited by a secret UN organization called NERV, and asked to pilot an equally enigmatic bio-mechanical construct known as Evangelion Unit-01.

Analysis

  • Neon Genesis Evangelion Title

The original Japanese title of the show is actually Shin Seiki Evangelion (新世紀エヴァンゲリオン), which most literally translates to 'Gospel of a New Century,' or 'New Century Gospel.' The 'Neon' is a mistranslation by Gainax believed to have been made for aesthetic reasons.
  • The Four Arcs

Based on the tone of the episodes, Neon Genesis Evangelion is divided into four distinct arcs; episodes 01 to 07 are the prologue or introduction arc, episodes 08 to 13 are the action arc, episodes 14 to 19 are the descent arc, and episodes 20 to 26 are the deconstruction arc.
